VISUAL FIELD TESTS

A visual field test is a method of measuring an individual’s entire scope of vision, that is their central and peripheral (side) vision. Visual field testing actually maps the visual fields of each eye individually. The visual field test is a subjective examination, requiring the patient to understand the testing instructions, fully cooperate, and complete the entire test in order to provide useful information.

PROCEDURE

Visual field testing is performed one eye at a time, with the opposite eye completely covered. You will be seated in a chair in the diagnostic procedure room. Your head will then be positioned so that your chin is resting in front of the Visual Field machine. During the test, a technician will have you look in certain directions, and you may see several lights. The test is completely painless and safe; the entire procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

BENEFITS OF PROCEDURE

Visual field testing is a tool used in screening for glaucoma. It allows a patient with glaucoma to be tested for treatment responses. This test can also be used for testing for lid droop or ptosis. It also aids in testing for macular diseases such as macular degeneration, retinal detachments or retinitis pigmentosa.
