Combined Surgeries
What is a Combined Surgery and why do it?
Sometimes when your eye has two ocular conditions requiring surgical treatment, the surgeries can be combined to be performed together in a single day.
What surgeries are typically combined?
Many surgeries can now be combined together. Typical combined surgeries include:
1. Cataract surgery combined with corneal transplants.
2. Cataract surgery combined with a vitrectomy.
3. Cataract surgery combined with glaucoma surgery.
Are there additional complications with a combined procedure?
Depending on the procedure, a combined procedure is typically more complicated to perform and takes longer in the operating room. The eye may feel more uncomfortable after the procedure since the eye is manipulated to a greater extent. However, given that it saves a trip to the operating room and a second recovery period, there are many advantages.
Will my vision suffer if I choose to do two separate procedures?
Usually no. In the case where your ophthalomolgist feels this may happen, this will be disclosed to you up front. Despite increased efficiency with a combined procedure, the main goal above all else remains to do no harm and maximize your visual potential.
